You want your smile to look good for as long as possible. This means you…
It’s Time to Spring Clean Your Mouth (Spring Dental Health)
Spring is a time for renewal and refreshment, and what better way to start than by spring cleaning your dental health? Maintaining good oral hygiene is important not just for a sparkling smile but also for your overall physical and mental health. With that said, we thought we’d share some tips for changing and/or improving your dental health.
Brush and Floss Regularly
The foundation of good dental health is brushing and flossing regularly. Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Don’t forget also to floss at least once a day to remove plaque and food particles that your toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing is important and should not be overlooked.
Replace Your Toothbrush
Believe it or not, your toothbrush should be replaced every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed. When was the last time you bought a new one? A worn-out toothbrush won’t clean your teeth as effectively! We suggest that our patients invest in a simple electric toothbrush that uses replaceable brush heads. If you’re prone to forgetfulness, consider setting a calendar reminder to replace the head!
Use Mouthwash
Mouthwash can help kill bacteria that cause bad breath and gum disease. Choose an alcohol-free mouthwash that contains fluoride for the best results. Mouthwashes with alcohol are too strong and will impact the bacteria balance in your mouth and may even irritate your gums. Plus, fluoridated mouthwashes provide you with much-needed fluoride to strengthen enamel. Swish the mouthwash around in your mouth for 30 seconds after brushing and flossing.
Clean Your Tongue
Don’t forget to clean your tongue, too! Bacteria can build up on your tongue and cause bad breath. Use a tongue scraper or brush to remove the bacteria and debris from your tongue gently.
Visit the Dentist
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are important to maintain good oral health. Your dentist can detect and treat problems before they become more serious. Make sure to schedule a cleaning and check-up at least once a year or more frequently if your dentist recommends it.
Watch Your Diet
Your diet can have a big impact on your dental health. Avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks, which can erode tooth enamel and cause cavities. Instead, eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains.
Wear a Mouthguard
If you play sports or grind your teeth at night, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth from damage. A custom-fitted mouthguard from your dentist is the best option for maximum protection. Teeth grinding or bruxism can cause headaches and neck pain as well as tooth damage, so it’s important to identify and minimize nighttime grinding.
Drink Plenty of Water
Drinking water is not only good for your overall health, but it can also help keep your teeth clean. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria from your mouth. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and after meals if you can.
We hope these tips help you take a new look at your mouth health. While spring is a great time to “clean out” the old ways of doing things, these tips can be used any time of the year! Of course, reach out to us at any time to schedule a check-up!
